More Than a Memory

I want to be more than a memory
that comes to you at times
yet often not.
I want to be in your thoughts
and in your dreams…
to be in your past
and in your future, too.
I want to share your days
to be more than a memory.

As the future comes in focus
much of the past just blurs.
What can it be that holds this world together?
It’s not much more than memories!

Forget your troubles of today.
Open your mind to things of past
with hope for things to come.
And have the vision to look ahead
while often glimpsing backward.

And though we are but little more
than what has come before,
and each of us sure something less
than what the future stores,
still each of us is all we bring
to the caravans of blood and time.

The future’s yours from day to day.
The past now towers behind.
And though perspective surely yours
it’s good to view as others have.
Remember not for sentiment
but for strength and judgment, too,
and for faith and hope to make us last.

Please think of me at times.
And think of others brought to you
through our memories.
And when it comes your time
I wish you pass this on,
and make us passengers
of your future’s memory.

My wish: you hand us down.
For family, for history
take us lovingly forward.
And with memories in tact
you’ll never walk alone.
Make us more than a memory!
